On Wednesday, March 25, 1998, we drove to Landau, a short one-hour trip, looking for Morzheim and the Zahniser Family. Morzheim was a small village and very deserted. As we were driving up an alley, looking for #3 Spelzen, we saw a man walking and asked for directions. This, coincidentally, turned out to be Norbert Hoffmann. We managed to convey that we were Zahniser cousins looking for Ruth and Norbert Hoffmann. We were at the right house and he invited us to meet Ruth. Our communication skills were very limited, so Norbert left and returned a short time later with Sonja, the 25-year-old daughter, who spoke fairly good English and we learned a little bit about their family history. We learned that Ruth's father, Hermann Kopf, is still alive, living next door at age 93. Mr. Kopfs mother was Elizabeth Zahneisen and Elizabeth's father was Konrad Zahneisen. We spent a few hours walking around the village, looking at the vineyards. We had a light lunch with the Hoffmann's. Norbert took us into the barn across the lane to show us his wine-making equipment, including large vats and several pieces of machinery. Shirley was given a sample of the finished product and thought it was very tasty.

As we departed from Morzheim, we took Sonja back into Landau to drop her off at work. She has visited The United States in the past and has some knowledge of our country. Ruth is 44 and Norbert is 50. We didn't meet their son, who was at work. In Landau, we were able to locate the Zahneisen Bakery on the main street and met Ria Zahneisen. She found an English-speaking friend next door, so we were able to have a short chat.

The time of the change of name from Zahneisen to Zahniser is uncertain. The

earliest records known in Mercer County show the present day spelling, but the

marriage record of Anna Maria Lindt and Matthias Zahneisen appears on page

214 of PENNSYLVANIA GERMAN MARRIAGES- Genealogical Publishing Co., 1982,
